Beauty from the Broken

I find mosaics intriguing.  Beauty created from broken.  Perhaps you’ve seen table tops made from broken pieces of china or art work made from sea glass formed out of fragments of discarded bottles.  Stained glass windows which adorn cathedrals and churches would not be possible without the individual and many times oddly shaped pieces of glass.  The allure in a single segment is not always readily visible, but as it takes its place in the design, beauty emerges as it contributes what only it has the ability to add.

Mosaics are a good depiction of the whole of our lives.  There are clear moments of joy and beauty that we proudly display and embrace, but then there are the broken pieces, a lost dream, shattered hope, broken relationship, death, divorce, betrayal, illness, financial loss, failure, that fail to yield any beauty in themselves, just broken shards we are eager to discard.

We fail to see any value in the debris and have an even harder time visualizing it as part of the design of our longed-for life.  Really, if it were up to us, we would render it useless and banish it altogether feeling that it mars the design.

God has a different perspective on the brokenness in our lives.  He is not bound by time.  He created time.  So as we stand in the middle of the broken pieces wondering what will become of the mess, He stands at the point of our completion and calls it good because He is good.  Philippians 1:6 tells us that He is faithful to complete the good work He started in us.

He’s not scratching his head wondering what to do with the shattered pieces.  He wasn’t in the least bit surprised by the “broken.”  He knows exactly how each fragment fits together to create the masterpiece.  Romans 8:28 tells us that ALL things work together for the good of those that love Him.

So the detours, the bad choices, the let downs, the sin, although not necessarily God’s plan for our lives, give him opportunities to show His character and creative prowess to turn the shambles of the broken into unrivaled beauty.

I don’t know your particular struggles.  I have my own for sure.  But this I do know.  The lies that tell you that you are broken beyond repair, that you are damaged, hopeless, and destined to fail cannot stand up to the truth.

 

The truth is that He will finish the good work that He started in you.

 

The truth is that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God.

 

The truth is that His plans for you are good plans to give you a hope and a future.

 

Wrap yourself up in the truth of His word.  The truth will set you free from the lies you’ve been believing about yourself, your situation, and who God is.

I encourage you to wait for the masterpiece to be in full display, every piece in its perfect place before you pass judgment on its worth.  The Master Craftsman has a way of making Masterpieces out of the broken, and His works are priceless!
